Lovely little town with one of the most interesting festivals in Japan. I was there for the spring addition (they also have one in the fall) and it involves the world's slowest parade (ha!) of really old floats, several which have intricate puppets which represent different deities. I wish I had spent more time as the town itself is quaint and friendly. Definitely want to return.
This is a small city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is also commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama. Great place to shop and see small shops that take pride in the products they present. The train station is right near the center of town and with the town being small it is easy to walk around.
A classy town with a lot of character. Great for families or travelers interested in nature. Those interested in the culture of mountainous Japan will find many sites to also appreciate those stories, while "higher-brow" travelers might appreciate most the slower pace, the art galleries, and the luxury goods. (i.e. great sake, Hida beef, several resorts) All-around well balanced, family-friendly, nature and culture-filled fun.
Best Fuji Apples in the world. Size of a big grapefruit and just as juicy. Wonderful town, great lacquerware!
