DELFT Delft is more than 750 years old. The city owes its name to the world ‘delving’ digging the oldest canal, the Oude Delft. In 1246, delft received its city franchise from the Dutch Earl Willem II. Delft flourished and new neighbourhoods were added. As early as 1355 the city reached the size it would remain until the 19th century. Delft was also part of the Dutch East India Company one of the largest trading companies in the world with a fleet of more than one hundred ships, thousands of employees, offices in Asia and six sites in the Netherlands, of which one in Delft. In 1602, Delft was a flourishing city, a centre of painting, arts, crafts and science. Delft added another important aspect – the trade with faraway countries, Spices, coffee, tea and Chinese porcelain now found their way to the Republic of the Netherlands and Delft.
Picturesque small city south of Amsterdam near The Hague and Rotterdam. If you are in to pottery this is a must see place. The old town is very walkable from the train station and very much alive. Lots of nice shops and restaurants.
This university town also offers something for all ages and interests. From markets and museums to canal tours and art history. You can watch as Delft Blue earthenware is made at Royal Delft. The factory has been producing the hand-painted, iconic blue pieces since the sixteenth century. The Vermeer Centre details the life and works of painter Johannes Vermeer, creator of the famous "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" painting.
A nice small city with beautiful canals and far fewer tourists than Amsterdam. Makes a great day trip. or better yet, spend the night.
