Smooth Operators of Bulgaria
The hostel occupies an old building that appears to have been converted into accommodation rather hastily. The interior is cheap and charmless, with small rooms along long corridors and shaky metal bunk beds packed closely together, trashcans placed in the hallway, outside of the rooms, convenient for the cleaning staff, not for guests.
The overall atmosphere is institutional.
There were also some basic practical disappointments. A towel costs 3 € to use, with a 5 € deposit. Apparently, even a towel requires a security deposit. The fridge gave out a horrid odour when I stayed there.
But the facilities were not the main problem. It was the way guests were treated.
During my stay, I witnessed the receptionist, who introduced himself as Dali, deal with another guest in a way that I found particularly unpleasant.
The guest was a senior citizen who had arrived at around 6 am for his check-in. Dali was very upset by this, because he doesn't only work there, but also spends his nights sleeping on the couch of the reception.
The senior guest who had arrived too early waited for check-in patiently until after 2 pm, only to be told that he was too old to stay at the hostel and could not be accommodated.
I understand that the hostel has an age restriction. What was problematic was that the guest had already received a booking confirmation and paid for his stay. The age restriction was brought to his attention only after he had arrived and waited for approximately eight hours.
In addition he had booked and paid through a platform. Dali refused to assist him with getting his money back from the third party, and wouldn't even allow him to use the hostel Wi-Fi to sort out the situation and arrange accommodation elsewhere.
The way he was spoken to was not what I would consider polite or professional.
Watching someone who had travelled to the hostel, waited there at the lobby for hours and had a confirmed, paid booking suddenly find himself without accommodation was not pleasant to witness and contributed to establishing a hostile atmosphere.
Unfortunately, that was not the only uncomfortable incident I witnessed.
I was still sitting in reception reading a book while waiting for my bus when a man entered and began arguing with Dali. He was visibly angry, raised his voice and demanded money. I heard him demanding 10 %, while Dali said he was willing to pay 5 %. The discussion appeared to involve electricity and the work involved in maintaining whatever they were discussing, although I wasn't interested in their dispute and tried to focus on my book.
The man was aggressive and threatened to have Dali removed. After he left, I asked Dali what that was about.
At first he acted as though there had been no incident. He then said it was “not what you think” and eventually told me that the man was the owner of the hostel and that it was a private matter.
I agreed that it was their private matter. My point was simply that it had taken place openly in the reception area, in front of guests, and involved shouting and threats. I suggested that private matters would be better handled privately.
This apparently required further discussion.
Dali told me that the owner wanted to see me downstairs to explain what had happened. Since I still had about an hour before my bus, I accepted the invitation.
The man, claiming to be the owner, demanded to know who I was and told me I should report to the police, if what they were doing bothered me. I explained that I was a paying guest sitting in the reception area when the argument happened.
A woman who was accompanying him kept yelling at me: “Who are you? You are nobody! You are sick!”
This casted a shadow of doubt on the sincerity of the notice on the reception desk stating “Your opinion matters".
I was not particularly interested in becoming involved in their dispute in the first place, but it was so loud it prevented me from concentrating on the book I was reading. I had been drawn into the situation because the argument had happened in the lobby. The subsequent treatment was unnecessarily confrontational.
Eventually Dali told me to leave the premises. Fortunately, this fitted my schedule quite well: my bus was leaving shortly anyway, so I collected my luggage and left.
Overall, I found the accommodation very basic, the facilities disappointing, the customer service hostile and highly unprofessional.
The hostel may be suitable for someone looking for cheap accommodation if other hostels are full and they have no other option than to stay in Sofia.
Based on my experience, however, I would recommend reading the booking conditions very carefully, being prepared for some unusual customer-service experiences and not going alone.

Terrible attitude. Was lucky to avoid
Was there for just a minute but could already tell things were wrong by the attitude of the receptionist who was hostile, rude, unprofessional and quite smelly
When I asked about the prices, he started to preach about not needing guests like that who stay for "almost free" and are only looking for good deals(???)
Certainly dodged a bullet after seeing the rest of the reviews talking about his creepy behavior

Sofia's hostel!
Good... there is a kitchen that is quite nice for cooking and a good common area for socializing.
Correct... bathrooms and rooms. They do not provide towels, free crepes on Mondays.
Unfortunately, there are many stairs to climb up and down since there is no elevator. The reception staff was not pleasant, which is disappointing for a good hostel.

Angry, power trip reception
Unfortunately, one of the male staff members (pictured) was the complete opposite. From the moment we arrived, he was rude, dismissive, and unwelcoming. He would sit in the lounge area with his feet up and respond to simple questions with one-word answers, which is far from the level of hospitality you’d expect.
His behaviour quickly escalated, he was aggressive, raising his voice, and came across as hostile from the start. At one point, he was even meowing at guests, which made people visibly uncomfortable and created a very strange atmosphere. He also appeared erratic, frequently sniffing and acting in a way that didn’t seem appropriate for someone working with guests.
Things got worse due to what seemed like a misunderstanding of rules that were never clearly explained. Despite this, he reacted by kicking me out and only giving me 20 minutes to pack all my belongings, which was completely unreasonable. He even went as far as calling the police over the situation when I simply wanted to brush my teeth before leaving.
What’s most frustrating is that we barely had any real interaction, yet he labelled me as “rude” and escalated the situation unnecessarily. I was nothing but calm and respectful throughout, but it felt like he was looking for any reason to remove me.
It’s a shame because the hostel itself has potential, and some of the staff are great. However, experiences like this completely ruin your stay. Management seriously needs to address this kind of behaviour.
