Panaji (or Panjim, its former Portuguese name) is the state capital of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district. Panaji is a one of the most relaxed state capitals in India, and the city has a Portuguese ambience with its churches, riverside promenade, tree-lined avenues, cobbled streets and grand colonial buildings of terracotta-tiled roofs and wrought iron balconies. The capital is a great place for walking, good food and meeting real Goans.
A charming colonial city and capital of the state of Goa, Panaji (sometimes also called Panjim) might not be the most exciting thing the area has to offer, but the precincts of the city center (with their collection of waterways, lovely whitestone missions going mottled in the tropical humidity, and colonial buildings with rickety shuttered balconies of dark wood) make an interesting counterpoint to the beach scene for which Goa is known. Worth a night's stay, particularly if you can find a good guesthouse.
