Cadaques, Nowadays many day-trippers come specifically to see the house of Salvador Dalí, who in 1930 settled in the tiny nearby village of Port lligat. His house — or, rather, series of interconnected houses — has been turned into a museum: Casa-Museo Salvador Dalí. Dali stayed in Portlligat until 1982 when, upon the death of his wife Gala, he took up residence at the castle he built for her in Púbol.

Tucked away on the coast north of Rosas and South of the French border. Home of one of the Dali Museums. A twisty hilly drive to get there. Worth a day's visit.

If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Barcelona, a short 2-hour trip away, up the Mediterranean Coast you will find beautiful, yet quaint, Cadaques, Spain. As you descend along the winding road, the excitement builds when the blue sea comes into view. Quintessential ivory edifices line the hills above as you meander through the movie-like cobblestone streets. Drivers may be surprised at the balancing act between the cars along the two-lane streets, and the hordes of walking tourists, mainly European sharing the very same road. The traditional Spanish fare with an ocean spin can be found here, but this small town does not disappoint for all those discerning foodies. The rocky beaches make it a little uncomfortable for working on that tan, but worth the pain considering your inspiring surroundings. There is a vigorous nightlife in the summer, so take time to visit one of the colorful bars with live music, or local galleries. Legend has it that a variety of artistic luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and it's most famous son-Salvador Dali, have all spent time in this once bohemian, now touristy town. Be sure to plan ahead to visit all of Dali's historic haunts, including his home in Port Lligat, very close to Cadaques.
