Selçuk is a working town, famous for it's nesting storks, and the local sites, which include The Ephesus Museum and St John Basilica as well as the 14th-century İsa Bey Mosque, and the ruins of the Temple of Artemis - one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is a good overnight stop if you want to make an early in the day visit to Ephesus, and as a base for visiting the nearby village of Şirince.

Selcuk is the modern-day decedent of Ephesus. It's unexceptional, yet a pleasant inhabited outpost. The key historical sights here are the Ephesus Museum and the foundations of the Basilica of St. John. Gayle and I passed through on our way to and from Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary.

I spent four days in Selcuk over Kurban Bayram in December 2008. I found the town itself to be a charming, safe place to stay. Everywhere my wife and I strolled we could wood fire. Downtown there are many leftover columns and ruins of an aquaduct. An interesting feature of the town is that there are many stork nests. The biggest attraction is the nearby ruined city of Ephesus. Ephesus, which was abandoned after its harbor silted over, is in remarkable condition. There's an amphitheatre, library and many temples in excellent condition. The Basilica of Saint John is another important attraction. This ruined church is essentially a maze of columns and arches and is the last resting place of the apostle, St. John. Finally there is Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Frankly, there isn't much to see. The Temple was destroyed long ago by earthquakes, arson and Christian mobs. The "column" that stands on the site is really just ramdom rubble piled up.
